Rootstock is a Bitcoin Layer 2 (L2) solution designed to bring smart contract functionality to the Bitcoin network. Operating as a sidechain, Rootstock uses a two-way peg to convert Bitcoin (BTC) into "Smart Bitcoin" (RBTC), allowing users to interact with decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts.
With compatibility with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), developers can build on Rootstock using Ethereum’s toolset. Secured by merged mining with Bitcoin, Rootstock leverages Bitcoin’s security while increasing scalability and enabling decentralized finance (DeFi) directly on Bitcoin, expanding its utility beyond simple value transfer.
Users transfer BTC to Rootstock by locking it in a special address on the Bitcoin main chain, which triggers the issuance of RBTC on the Rootstock network. RBTC can then be used to execute smart contracts and interact with dApps on the Rootstock platform.
Once BTC is converted to RBTC, it functions similarly to ETH on Ethereum. Users can deploy and execute smart contracts, enabling decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, token issuance, and other blockchain applications on Bitcoin.
Rootstock’s security is closely tied to Bitcoin. By enabling Bitcoin miners to mine both Rootstock and Bitcoin simultaneously through merged mining, Rootstock inherits Bitcoin’s massive hashing power, making it highly secure.
Rootstock enables decentralized finance applications such as lending, borrowing, and stablecoins to be built directly on Bitcoin. This allows Bitcoin holders to participate in DeFi without moving their assets to other blockchains.
Rootstock allows the creation of tokens and NFTs (non-fungible tokens) using Bitcoin’s security infrastructure. This expands Bitcoin's use case beyond simple value transfer to more advanced applications like token economies.
With Rootstock’s EVM compatibility, it is possible to create bridges between Bitcoin and Ethereum, allowing liquidity and assets to flow between these two major blockchain networks.
Interest in Rootstock has been growing, as shown by the Total Value Locked (TVL) on the chain.
According to
DefiLlama, the TVL on Rootstock has shown a strong upward trend over the last few months, indicating increasing confidence and participation in the Rootstock ecosystem.
L2s can process hundreds of transactions off-chain and batch them for settlement on the Bitcoin main chain, vastly improving scalability.
L2s reduce per-transaction costs by batching and off-chain processing, addressing Bitcoin’s high transaction fees.
L2s can introduce smart contract functionality without modifying Bitcoin’s core protocol, expanding its use cases beyond simple transactions.
Off-chain transactions can be near-instant, with the final settlement on the main chain later.
